Which is as good a sentence as any to start my blog. And it has the advantage that it sums up my current state of mind perfectly. I am outraged about a lot of things, but I'm particularly angered by the GameSpot article I just read, http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/07/15/news_6129209.html .
It deals with the "Hot Coffee" mod (or hack) created for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. There is a limit to the amount of drivel you can publish under the guise of independence and impartiality. GameSpot crosses that line. If you've just flown in from Mars or something and don't know what the commotion is about the article goes some way in explaining that at least. In short, the article denounces sex in games. To quote Californian book burning brown shirt Leland Yee: "What I say to parents is: If I were you, I wouldn't have my kids purchasing [these games], nor would I buy any of these M-rated games for my children," Yee said. "Right now, nobody can be assured as to what you're purchasing. Who knows what is embedded in these games? You cannot trust the rating system anymore." Yeah, this is really what the world needs now. A paranoiac with-hunt for potential dangerous content in games.

This guy is so wrong and dangerous in ways I cannot begin to list. And he's an California State Assemblyman, which in the minds of many simple people could actually lend weight to his words.
If we leave the hollow rhetoric aside for a moment, what exactly is the danger in a 3rd party modification to a game that allows players to run errants in exchange for sex. For crying out loud the game itself deals with being a gang-member gangster shooting up people!
In what IDIOTIC state of mind is it okay for kids to learn how to do drive-by shootings but offensive for them to see a man get head and having good sex? BTW, from the brief video footage I've seen of this mod, it looked as the (virtual) woman was enjoying it as well, we're not talking rape here.

I guess the UsA is in a lot of trouble when people like Leland Yee can shoot off their mouths like that without anyone really noticing. That's more or less their problem and specifically the problem of the residents of California.
I am outraged however that GameSpot published this garbage without any commentary or opposing reactions in the article. The day to stand impartially at the sidelines has gone. Even Hillary Clinton has jumped the right-wing Moral Majority bandwagon. It's as if Reagan is still alive and president. This is no time to stand idly by. Entertainment magazines, online and offline, should be the voice of reason and dissent in this absurd discussion.
Because whilst intelligent people now stand by and think this issue is too idiotic to be important, they will have time enough in the not-so-distant future to rue their inactivity.

I don't know where this is going, but I have a bad, bad feeling about it.
I wonder how Leland Yee looks in uniform?
